Here we are 32 years after this programme was made and some people still hope that AM stereo is going to work. Of course, AM Stereo was analogue technology. In the meantime, several attempts have been made to digitize the AM broadcast dial with technologies like HDRadio and DRM. Frankly, I think the conclusions we drew in 1983 apply now. It isn't going to happen. But it is still fun to discuss why. Enjoy this vintage edition of Media Network.
AM Stereo very nearly took off in the late 80's in the United Kingdom;the Independent Broadcasting Authority carried out some tests on Radio Orwell's 1170kHz 257metres Medium Wave transmitter and these tests were quite successful. It's a shame it didn't take off in the end, because it would have given local medium wave radio stations in the United Kingdom something extra to their existing services transmitted here.
Surely HD Radio and AM stereo are two completely different things. AM stereo being analogue CQUAM or similar and HD Radio be IBOC digital.
AM Stereo and HD Radio are two completely different things. HD Radio (IBOC) can be compared to DRM. It's mostly used in the 'hybrid' mode in the US/Canada. This creates digitale sidebands next to the analog AM signal. Making it compatible with analog radio's.
Thanks for posting these, I really enjoy listening to these old recordings.
