The Media Network Vintage Vault 2024-2025

November 2024 - A message from Jonathan Marks, producer Media Network.  Yes, we're still here although my other work has meant I have little time for shortwave these days. I've started sorting out some off-air archives in the audio-only selections. It's true, radio has a terrible memory. (I'm delighted to learn that the British Vintage Wireless Society is still going strong https://www.bvws.org.uk ) Now you know why I am publishing old editions of Media Network here on this site, as well as some of the off-air recordings of stations I monitored in the 80's and 90's as part of the research for the programme. I'm simply looking for ways to capture more unique stories that I believe need to be told before we all forget. I realise that in 1000 editions of Media Network, we had only just begun the scratch the surface. So at this time of reflection, I'd just like to thank everyone for their support and encouragement as the archive project enters a new phase.   First time visitor? I'm Jonathan Marks. If this is the first time you've visited the vault, then I'm glad you dropped by! There are over 660 editions of Media Network, representing just over half the episodes that we made and broadcast from the Radio Netherlands' studios in Hilversum. I'm pleased to say most survived in excellent studio quality (quite often in stereo).

Nov 23, 2013

This was a news show 1.6 million tune in to Radio Netherlands in Dutch during their summer holiday. WWV and WWVH have had problems with their automated time announcements. Drum recorders are back on line. Victor Goonetilleke has news about Cambodia. VOA is having challenges building its transmitters at a new site 50km North of Colombo.

Why did we broadcast all these numbers? People forget none of the listeners had access on-line and only a fraction of the audience had access to printed DX bulletins. Andy Sennitt reports on what is in the 1992 World Radio TV Handbook. James Robinson reports that several UK local radio stations are leaving mediumwave. WLS 890kHz is scrapping its FM format. A new Catholic SW station WEWN was being built in Birminngham, Alabama. Dave Rosenthal reports on an experiment in McMurdo. Remember this show is 22 years old!

Vasily Strelnikov signs off at Radio Moscow World Service and recommends people to tune into Radio Netherlands. Radio Moscow staff watch the red flags of the USSR being lowered.

Jonathan, your passion for radio and commitment towards Media in general is clearly visible in your effort to upload all these mp3s; making these fond memories available to listener like me,in studio quality who although started SW-listening very late in 1987, but the joy of reliving those memories is no less. As they say there is no life without memories, in a way you have given life to my past.I can't thank you enough!! By the way I won the WRTH on your show in a quiz competetion where the listeners were asked to cover as many national radio stations in a fixed number of kilometers in a virtual tour. You can't imagine the joy, a listener felt on hearing the news of winning the prize and subsequently receiving it in post. I could never afford WRTH, the price was equal to my annual college fees!! RNW was the first station on which I won my first prize in ASIA_SCAN quiz. Pete Myers and Mike Bullen were kind enough to send me a signed photo as a commiseration when my entry was not picked in lucky draw.
Thanking you wouldn't be enough!! keep up the good work and we are looking forward to more such Media network editions.
sincerely
